이번 프로젝트 작품 구상을 위해 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 돌려보는 중에 이리저리 움직이며 갈라지고 합쳐지는 유체의 모습을 보고 떠올린 구절이 있었다. 그것은 니체의<권력에의 의지(The will to power)>에서 나온 구절이다.
인생을 쉽게, 그리고 안락하게 보내고 싶은가?
그렇다면 무리 짓지 않고서는 한시도 견디지 못하는 사람들 속에 섞여 있으면 된다.
언제나 군중과 함께 있으면서 끝내 자신이라는 존재를 잊고 살아가면 된다.
위와 같은 선상에서 이 프로젝트의 제목은 중력에의 의지(The will to gravity)가 되었다.
골짜기의 높이차로 생긴 물리적 변화에 의해 공들은 갈라지고 합쳐지기를 반복하고 금색으로 치장된 플라스틱 공들은 서로 부딪혀 요란한 소리를 내며 이리저리 휩쓸려 다닌다. 니체의<권력에의 의지(The will to power)>에서는 권력에의 의지는 사실 욕망, 충동, 생존, 삶에의 의지 같은 것들이며 권력 그 자체는 악한 것이 아닌 생명의 근본적인 현상이고 생명이 있는 곳에는 언제나 권력에의 의지가 있다고 설명하고 있다.
The title of this work, The Will to Gravity, is a parody of Nietzsche’s philosophy book The will to power. The following sentences are from this book.
Do you want to have an easy life?
Then always stay with the herd and lose yourself in the herd.
Looking at magnetic-fluid splitting up and then getting back together while running simulations for the work, these phrases came to the artist’s mind. Connecting wires from the surface of the tent (10 x 10m) to motors installed on the ceiling, various forms of valleys are made as these strings are wound and unwound.
For the physical changes made by the difference of the height of the valleys, the balls constantly split up and come back together. Decorated in gold, plastic balls move around while making loud noises as they bump into each other. According to the book, The will to power is in fact will to desire, impulse, survival and life. Power itself is not evil. It is a fundamental phenomenon of life and wherever life is, there is always will to power.
